HIGHLIGHTS
OF SPRING BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETING
The spring Board of Governors meeting of Sons &
Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen was conducted Saturday, March 28, 2009 at
the Hotel Lafayette in Marietta, OH. All members with the exception of
David Smith were present.
A presentation was made by Andy Verhoff and Mr.
George Kane, Director of Historic Sites and Facilities, Ohio Historical
Society. Greatly distilled, their report basically was that if no new
funding is received, the State of Ohio would close the Ohio River Museum
and Campus Martius Museum as of June 30, 2009. If funding at the
current level is received from the state, the museums would be open
limited hours. It was suggested by Museum Committee chair J.W. Rutter
that S&D cover expenses to keep the Ohio River museum open longer hours
if the state appropriates funding beyond June 30,
2009. The cost to our organization would be in the neighborhood of
$10,000. This proposal was voted on by the Board and passed
unanimously. Further research is being conducted to see what expenses
might be reduced without sacrifice of quality and hours and days of
operation. If the State of Ohio cannot/will not fund museum operation
after June 30th, S&D’s proposal is no longer valid; we would
not fund the museum operations. This is chiefly due to the amounts
of money involved; S&D cannot afford to absorb the cost of operating the
Ohio River Museum without the OHS.
We currently have 832 members; 593 full members and
239 associate. Some have been lost due to attrition; Rick Kesterman,
Secretary, continues to receive new memberships throughout the year.
We are solvent as an organization.
An index of S&D Reflectors is being compiled
by Alan Bates for the years 2004-2008.
A great meeting is being planned for September.
Plans are not quite yet finalized, but President Spear promises a great
meeting at Marietta this year. The Board voted to formally ask the
Midwest Riverboat Buffs to join S&D this year to help us celebrate S&D’s
70th anniversary.
Several ideas were presented to increase S&D’s
presence on the World Wide Web, and they will be incorporated very soon.
Watch the S&D web site for regular changes and updates, and a new
feature, online articles.

Public Library
Provides Wider Access to Collection’s Treasures
Wikis: Inland Riverboats Photo Collection & Lincoln Letters Collection
The
Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County’s collection includes
more than 10 million items – audiobooks, music CDs, DVDs, printed
publications such as books, magazines, and newspapers, and even digital
items like e-books and e-videos. With all of that material and a limited
amount of space, historical treasures like the Inland Riverboats
Photograph Collection and letters penned by President Abraham Lincoln
himself might have been overshadowed by the ever-changing and
ever-growing collection.
